ACTH (1-39), full name adenocorticotropic hormone, is a peptide hormone also known as corticotropin. ACTH is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and is often produced in response to stress. ACTH controls the release of glucocorticoid hormones and enhances the transcription of mitochondial genes for oxidative phosphorylation. ACTH is formed by cleavage of POMC (proopimelanocortin). The rat homolog is 95% identical to the human peptide.
